England have announced the squad for their tour to South Africa in February.
Kent’s Tammy Beaumont is back, though listed as “T20s Only”; but there is no room for Middlesex’s Fran Wilson, despite the fact that she was added to the list of contracted players only last month.
Also “out” is Laura Marsh – currently playing WBBL in Australia for the under-performing Sydney Sixers.

Anyone out there like to shed some light (after all, today is Epiphany) on how the introduction of the player with worst scoring rate in international T20s (of England’s current players – not just those listed above) is intended to resolve our T20 batting issues ?
Quite what the hell Wilson has got to do to break into the squads is beyond me.

I’m not against Beaumont being given another chance (she may not even play though, who knows) but her record is not too clever in T20, as Clanger points out, so there is a risk there. She would seem to be more suited to 50 overs so not sure about the logic there really. Having said that it’s very frustrating to see Wilson not included. Maybe the new coach has his own ideas. I think we might be OK in this series overall though. Most of the players have done quite well in WNCL/WBBL so far, and seem to be in some sort of form, certainly a bit more than the SA players.

I think the selection tallies with how Mark Robinson operated at Sussex. He had a good track record of taking players who had unfilled promise and bringing them up. Chris Jordan is an obvious example, Panesar benefited before his domestic situation unraveled, Ajmal Shazad was bowling very well before injury, and Ollie Robinson had an excellent season after being chucked out of Yorkshire. That England have talent in their ranks is not in question; the problem was a lack of performance. The SA tour strikes me as the first real chance Robinson has to assess the side that lost the Ashes and to decide who can step up and who needs to be replaced.
