NEWS: England World T20 Squad – Farrant In; Winfield Out

Kent’s Tash Farrant – who hasn’t played for England since the original central contracts were announced two years ago – is the surprise selection in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup in India next month.

A left-arm seamer, whose main weapons are line and length rather than pace, Farrant can be difficult to get away, and England will look to her to keep the run rate down rather than take wickets.

She has played 7 T20s and 1 ODI, the last during the 2013/ 14 Women’s Ashes in Australia, taking 5 wickets as a rookie 17-year-old. Now 19 with two years professional coaching behind her, she has her opportunity to make her mark on the world stage.

Not making the trip will be Yorkshire’s Lauren Winfield, after a string of low scores in 2015/ 16. Since making 70-odd against South Africa at the end of the 2014 summer, she has failed to pass 50 in 13 subsequent international innings across the formats, and it seems as though this poor form has finally come home to roost.

Katherine Brunt has been named in the squad, despite being sent home from South Africa with a recurrence of her ongoing back problems. If she is unable to recover, it is likely that Kate Cross will be on standby to take her place.

Full Squad:

  • Charlotte Edwards
  • Tammy Beaumont
  • Katherine Brunt
  • Georgia Elwiss
  • Tash Farrant
  • Lydia Greenway
  • Becky Grundy
  • Jenny Gunn
  • Dani Hazell
  • Amy Jones
  • Heather Knight
  • Nat Sciver
  • Anya Shrubsole
  • Sarah Taylor
  • Danni Wyatt

  1. To an MD blog I commented that Greenway may have been ‘dropped’ from the 3rd ODI in order to prop up the bowling. It looks like a batsman has been sacrificed in the World Cup T20 squad for the same reason (ie concerns a bowler might not last the whole event, need cover etc) – why else would a squad of 15 contain all of Brunt, Elwiss, Farrant, Gunn, Sciver and Shrubsole in a world cup being held in the sub-continent ?

The fact that Winfield is the batsmen that has been omitted is ‘interesting’.

    Beaumont (selected):
    Scores in last T20 World Cup: 2, 0, 2, 6
    T20 Career Average: 8.31
    T20 Career Scoring Rate: 66.17
    Last 5 T20 innings for England : 13, 2, 0, 2, 6

    Winfield (not selected):
Scores in last T20 World Cup: Not selected
    T20 Career Average: 17.00
    T20 Career Scoring Rate: 92.25
    Last 5 T20 innings for England : 74, 1, 48, 1, 1

Anyone out there, particularly Mark Robinson, care to shine some light on the above ?

I wonder if England will be the only team (ex. Australia of course) at the T20 World Cup to have not selected some of their players (currently 3 of them) that played in the WBBL ? It will be interesting to see if NZ, SA or West Indies fail to select any of their WBBL participants.

  2. It’s a big call to drop Winfield at this stage. I’d assumed that she would be included in the T20 World Cup squad as a kind of a last chance to perform. Most of Winfield’s failures have been in ODIs, so I can understand leaving her out of those, especially given her lack of scores in the SA series. But I thought that she was still in for T20, seeing that is supposed to be her speciality. I would call the decision slightly harsh…

What other consequences might this have? As the T20 series against SA kicks off tomorrow, can we assume that Winfield will also play no part in that now? If she did, and made runs, it would make the decision to leave her out look silly – so I assume she won’t be.

It must follow that this series is being used to trial a proposed T20 WC batting line-up. It looks like they will selecting a lot of all-rounders in the side. Depending on who is chosen there may only be 2-3 full “batsmen” as it were. But who will now open the innings? As much as I like Wyatt, it’s probably not her best role, so I’d like to see a slightly more solid partner for Edwards – I assume Jones / Knight / Taylor are top contenders. Whether Beaumont or Farrant will figure in the SA series I can only guess. Maybe Robinson knows something we don’t about Beaumont and there’s a big hitter in there somewhere (!?)

    • Good point about Winfield’s purpose in the South Africa T20 squad (or alternatively why the WC squad was announced before the SA tour completed). As you observe, Winfield must be practicing her drinks carrying skills because they can’t select her for a starting XI having just dropped her for the WC. All very strange.

  3. Utterly perplexing selection
“a squad of 15 contain all of Brunt, Elwiss, Farrant, Gunn, Sciver and Shrubsole in a world cup being held in the sub-continent”
Just can’t see the need for six seamers. In the match that has just started v SA we are only playing 3 seamers, in a country much more suited to that bowling type. However, we have 4 spin options in the XI! If we end up short of runs in the WT20, don’t say you weren’t warned. Also, has the squad deadline passed? BBC Sport says Pakistan and South Africa are yet to name their WT20 squad. Why would we announce the squad before we had to when we still have other T20 internationals to play?

  4. Just in case Greenway was dropped from today’s match rather than injured:-

    Beaumont (selected):
    Scores in last T20 World Cup: 2, 0, 2, 6
T20 Career Average: 8.31 (which is 22nd of the 30 Eng players that have an average)
T20 Career Scoring Rate: 66.17 (which is 28th of the 33 who have batted for Eng)
    Last 5 T20 innings for England : 13, 2, 0, 2, 6

    Greenway(not selected):
Scores in last T20 World Cup: 3, DNB, DNB, 22, 4
T20 Career Average: 25.26 (which is 4th of the 30 Eng players that have an average)
T20 Career Scoring Rate: 96.50 (which is 17th of the 33 who have batted for Eng)
    Last 5 T20 innings for England : 19*, 18*, 25, 26, 20*

    Presumably Greenway is injured.
