NEWS: Maia Bouchier And Charlie Dean Called Up To England Squad

Maia Bouchier and Charlie Dean have earned their maiden call-ups to the England squad which will face New Zealand in three T20s beginning on 1 September at Chelmsford.

Both were mainstays of their sides in The Hundred – Bouchier hit 33* from 19 balls in Southern Brave’s victory against Northern Superchargers; while off-spinning all-rounder Dean regularly bowled for London Spirit in the powerplay.

However, the call-ups are also a testament to the pair’s consistent performances for Southern Vipers over the past 18 months – both played a key role in the side which won the inaugural Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2020, and Bouchier has recently been seen opening for Vipers in the 20-over Charlotte Edwards Cup.

Fran Wilson has been omitted from the squad after sitting out of the India series earlier in the summer.

  2. The length of a cricket pitch is a chain (22 yards). Charlie Dean is an anagram of Chain Leader …………….. clearly a future England Captain.

  3. Yes you missed out Amy Jones, Raf. Anyway good to see some new names in there and I hope they also get to play a game or two as well and not just carry drinks.

    Dean has impressed with her bowling especially – it’s easy to go for runs in the powerplay but she’s bowled some pearlers and taken some great wickets. As for Bouchier she’s one of the more classy and powerful middle order bats around and a good fielder too.

    Unfortunate for Cross, Bell. Lamb, Gordon to name but a few, missing out. Maybe Glenn and Villiers a bit lucky to be in there ahead of them on current form. But there’s still the factor of being in the central contracts and that old phrase of being the first cab off the rank.

  5. So… Both Bouchier and Dean played in CE Cup today, but no other England iT20-squad players were allowed to. What does this mean for these 2 – they’re only going to play in the third game IF England go 2-0 up in the series? Disappointing if so.

    • Don’t think it necessarily means this. ECB statement on England players playing regional cricket:

      “Decisions were made on a player by player basis as to the preferred individualised preparation for the series – in some instances it was felt playing regional cricket was the best option whereas in the majority of cases, active rest was seen as the best lead-up to the first game in Chelmsford.”
