  1. Looking forward to the cheese&wine party – when can I expect the invite?

The change in the English language (not always for the better) reminded me when Ruth Prideaux coach of the England women’s team that won the world cup in 1993, asked me if I would take on her job as Chairman of the Sussex Women’s Cricket Association. A little tongue in cheek I said “Only if I can be the ‘Chairman'” to which she replied, “well I always insisted on it”.

A Lady from the Lady Taverners once said in a speech that she refused to be a Chair as they were something you sat on and no one was going to sit on her in a committee. It raised a smile and made the point strongly that she would not be bullied.

I am sure we could find a more suitable word for someone at the head of a committee. I am tempted to note we have the language of Shakespeare at our disposal but of course his language is even more out of date than mine!

Perhaps I can rescue my reputation a little by stating that a group of female players once decided I could call myself a feminist! Now that’s badge I’d be happy to wear with pride!

    Don
