This week:
I had this thought when she got out &, similarly, Dan Norcross said it at the end of the TMS broadcast; could this be the last time we see Knight in an ODI squad? Same could probably be said for DWH as well (but obviously was not included in squad).

I felt quite disheartened after the ODI games against New Zealand…in theory we should have thrashed them but we didn’t…. We have thrown a lot of money and time at developing our National team, much more than New Zealand, we have been giving our England squad the “best” extra coaching you can possibly give (some players have had up to 17 years extra England training ) and yet we still show lacklustre ! (If it was a business, you would say the cost to result ratio is not worth it)
It has been suggested that these England players are the best we have in domestic cricket ….. I think this is misguided, as some domestic players are out-performing the England players (you need to look at the ball by ball stats, not just the overall game stats); Reporters/commentators are also not comparing like for like……what standard would some of these domestic players be like if they had even a few years of intensive England coaching…. possibly more effective than we have now ?
To a layman it seems that England coaches/selectors pick up youngsters and stick with them even if they don’t develop as expected, once you are IN you are IN. England will try to remould players and turn them into something they need, rather than look outside to other domestic players to fulfil those roles. (No Keir Starmer U turns allowed in this organisation). Where is the drive to improve, when you know your place is safe and you are confident that England won’t look for replacements.
Looking at other countries, New Zealand included, the players are not flashy or extrovert or “have a point of difference” they are solid consistent players who work hard, work together and are selected on all round performances in all 3 disciplines (Australia would have no qualms about dropping a world class player that’s in a slump ).
If England want to win they have to make tough decisions (but fair decisions, Crossy you were let go to early), they need to develop more domestic players for constructive training sessions and let England players play in domestic competitions, because if they are not smashing it against the local domestic players they won’t be against other Countries’ squads.
