Another weekend, more RHF Trophy brilliance. The way Sparks set up their win over an excellent Vipers side was amazing. The game was marked by some moments of individual brilliance – for example, Dean’s dismissal of Jones, Glenn’s innings, Wyatt’s innings, and last but not least the bowling performances of Wong and Arlott.
Sparks’ batting was solid and persistent, and they reached a decent total, but it was with the ball that they really shone. I really can’t emphasise enough how good Arlott and Wong were together. It was thrilling, memorable stuff – a clinic in fast bowling. Not sure I’ve seen much like that in domestic women’s cricket before. Let’s hope it’s not just one performance – but to me Wong and Arlott look like game changers. It was like watching Shabnim Ismail and Ellyse Perry blowing England away. The relentless pace and aggression they showed was uncanny in this format. Normally you’d see a bowling change after 8 or 10 overs but these two kept going for 13, such was their dominance. Wong was bouncing Wyatt every over, Arlott was sending down wrecking balls, both were causing so many problems and Vipers had no answer. Their whole top order looked really uncomfortable and floundered when the wickets started tumbling. Wong and Arlott were all over them. They made a great partnership and were a big double threat, that all the other sides in the competition will be anxious about playing from here on in, I think. If they can recreate a fraction of that performance each game, Sparks could be going all the way this time.
On another note it was good to see ADR and Dunkley in such good form for Stars. Not so good to see one of my favourite sides Storm struggle with the ball a bit and not have much threat. ADR looks to have benefitted from opening the batting, she is at her best in my opinion when able to play for longer periods of time.
