  1. I was lured off the podcast by the shirts! Can’t be unseen! 😅

Yeah, the recent Motty hype has been a bit weird. Never seemed media were falling over themselves to praise him for Australia’s success till he got appointed to England men. Anyway, good luck to all.

I’ve never heard so much debate about cricket coaches, mostly in men’s cricket, than in the last year and I’m still none the wiser of how important they are to a set up frankly. Does a team run itself or not? Or is that just in the early scraggy days. And do they need hands on, angry bollocking types or hands off avuncular guardian angels? Some are celebrities with storied player careers, in the constant eye of the camera between overs, pontificating at every chance, others humble journeymen of yesteryear, shuffling about the back of the nets mumbling something.
Are they there to teach and improve technique and strategy or just to fan the flame of the blazing young spirit within, insecurities and odd techniques be damned! Ok, I’m being a bit flippant but you know what I mean.

It seems like if you’re a successful side with an experienced captain – a la Aussie women/ men, England white-ball men, England women (debatable success), India men then you just want a chill person who won’t irritate the captain. Will Vipers send Charlotte Edwards off if they win the double this year, and decide they’ve had enough of hands on, full on, team-building heartfelt expertise?

Then England men’s problems seem so deep and complex I can’t quite grasp what difference a new coach is going to make.
In cricket in the end it feels like all you can do is wait and see what happens after a ‘cycle’ and then decide whether they were any good or not based on the mood of team.. And in the meantime copy the thing that’s currently successful 🤷🏾‍♀️

  2. You have entered the Matthew Mott Multiverse, in which all statements about Matthew Mott can be true simultaneously. (I prefer the Michelle Yeoh Multiverse, but I’m unsure about her cricket coaching credentials.)
