  1. I don’t 100% agree with Alex Hartley here, but she’s not an ECB employee and as a journalist she needs to be an independent voice and speak her mind when appropriate. I’m just not a fan of this playing off the England men’s and women’s teams successes against each other, and we sometimes see it when the men’s team lose and the women win, and the media start using England Women as a stick with which to beat England men – ‘the women show them how it’s done etc.’ Does anyone here really like seeing that, and would anyone really want it to be tried the other way round?!

  2. I was really glad to see England just go for it with the bat today, with the series won, you don’t get many chances to just throw caution to the wind and attack every ball. That NZ innings earlier in the series with the maidens in a row really shouldn’t be seen in T20 cricket. And clearly England very confident in their bowling attack right now, fairly so!
    Soo good to see Fran Wilson and Sophia Dunkley actually get to bat and high- score to boot. Feels like England are waiting for a switch to flip and Danni Wyatt of old to emerge, while the heart is behind this plan, the head wonders how many opening balls she can chew up that could be better served teeing up someone else. The biggest downside of this tour for me was NZ’s sub-par performance but England can’t do anything about that, They mostly kept it tight and disciplined throughout. Maybe they could study though how they let a few tail-end partnerships last longer than they ought.
    I completely agree with Raf re Alex Hartley; I’m however naturally suspicious when national papers pick up a story and maybe look to stir the pot. Was great to hear Hartley on entirely her own terms on her own podcast. Haven’t heard it called Clapgate till today..haha! Sounds like a course of antibiotics required!
    Anyway, don’t wish to get greedy but a best of 5 in both formats would’ve been ideal!

  3. “Clapgate” is just another example of the misogyny inherent in our patriarchal culture. Good on Alex Hartley for standing her ground and not letting herself be browbeaten by a bunch of trolls. “Illegitimi non carborundum.” Great rant there, Raf; I hope the ECB was listening. Wonderful result for England against New Zealand. I was expecting a lot closer contest between the two teams. How on earth are the Kiwis going to withstand the Aussie juggernaut that is about to descend on them? Meanwhile, unless the Indian Women’s team recover their form and quickly, they will be shit out of luck in Lucknow. After the famine of the last year, it’s good to have a feast of women’s cricket at last; and I do hope it lasts. Thanks for doing your vodcasts, I look forward to them each week. Do not hesitate to take a swing at the patriarchy and their antiquated attitudes at every available opportunity. Onward, comrades; and confusion to our enemies! Ciao.

  4. ‘Clapgate’ is a great reminder of why I’m continuing my self-imposed twitter ban. 3 months and counting (aside from unavoidable work stuff and 1 or 2 slip-ups), and feel so much better for it.
    It’s a totally toxic platform that allows no room or space for nuance or detail and contains way too many people of all political persuasions trawling for a fight and to find fault in any statement… it’s horrible
    Anyway, it’s a terrible shame that there’s such a gender divide in English cricket. The close links and growing respect between the Aus teams has been a heartening development.
    New Zealand are in a poor state ATM. As you say, totally over dependent on Devine, and not seeming to have a lot coming through. Amelia Kerr aside their best players are 30 or more. We won’t see much more of Susie Bates, and Lea Tahuhu seems to be at the terminal career stage, injury-wise, for a pace bowler.
    With Kerr still developing, they desperately need Devine and Satterthwaite to stay fit and constantly firing. Other than them they seem to have, at best, what in Aussie Rules football are often called ‘good ordinary players’
    It’s hard to see them not falling way behind the top four unless they suddenly dig up 3-4 real talents
